Soul, Dreams and Interpretation

I have collected some authentic hadeeth on Souls, Dreams and Interpretation of Dreams. There is one book attributed to Imam Jafar Sadiq ( عليهما السلام) called Dream Interpretation, If you are interested in Interpreting your dream you can find the PDF book here.

Soul

حدثنا أبي و محمد بن الحسن رضي الله عنهما قالا حدثنا سعد بن عبد الله و عبد الله بن جعفر الحميري و محمد بن يحيى العطار و أحمد بن إدريس جميعا قالوا حدثنا أحمد بن أبي عبد الله البرقي قال حدثنا أبو هاشم داود بن القاسم الجعفري عن أبي جعفر الثاني محمد بن علي ع قال أقبل أمير المؤمنين ع ذات يوم و معه الحسن بن علي و سلمان الفارسي رضي الله عنه و أمير المؤمنين ع متكئ على يد سلمان فدخل المسجد الحرام فجلس إذ أقبل رجل حسن الهيئة و اللباس فسلم على أمير المؤمنين ع فرد عليه السلام فجلس ثم قال يا أمير المؤمنين أسألك عن ثلاث‏ مسائل إن أخبرتني بهن علمت أن القوم ركبوا من أمرك ما أقضي عليهم أنهم ليسوا بمأمونين في دنياهم و لا في آخرتهم و إن تكن الأخرى علمت أنك و هم شرع سواء فقال له أمير المؤمنين ع سلني عما بدا لك فقال أخبرني عن الرجل إذا نام أين تذهب روحه و عن الرجل كيف يذكر و ينسى و عن الرجل كيف يشبه ولده الأعمام و الأخوال فالتفت أمير المؤمنين إلى أبي محمد الحسن فقال يا أبا محمد أجبه فقال أما ما سألت عنه من أمر الإنسان إذا نام أين تذهب روحه فإن روحه متعلقة بالريح و الريح متعلقة بالهواء إلى وقت ما يتحرك صاحبها لليقظة فإن أذن الله عز و جل برد تلك الروح إلى صاحبها جذبت تلك الروح الريح و جذبت تلك الريح الهواء فرجعت الروح فأسكنت في بدن صاحبها و إن لم يأذن الله عز و جل برد تلك الروح إلى صاحبها جذب الهواء الريح و جذبت الريح الروح فلم ترد إلى صاحبها إلى وقت ما يبعث و أما ما ذكرت من أمر الذكر 

My father and Muhammad b. al-Hasan (رضي الله عنهما) narrated. They said: Sa`d b. `Abdillah and `Abdillah b. Ja`far al-Himyari and Muhammad b. Yahya al-`Attar and Ahmad b. Idris narrated together. They said: Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Barqi narrated. He said: Abu Hashim Dawud b. al-Qasim al-Ja`fari narrated from Abu Ja`far the Second b. `Ali( عليهما السلام), He said: 

Amr al-Mu’mineen عليه السلام came one day with al-Hasan b. `Ali and Salman al-Farisi رضي الله عنه, and Amir al-Mu’mineen عليه السلام was leaning on the hand of Salman [for support]. So he entered the Sacred Mosque and sat down, when a good-looking and well-dressed man met him. He gave salaam to Amir al-Mu’mineen عليه السلام and he عليه السلام answered him, so he sat. He then said: O Amir al-Mu’mineen, I will ask ask you three questions. If you inform me of their answers, I will acknowledge that the community that has mounted your affair are not safe in their life or in their afterlife. If it would be otherwise, then you and they will be the same. So Amir al-Mu’mineen عليه السلام said to him: Ask me whatever you wish. He said: Inform me of the man who sleeps – where does his soul go? And of the man – how does he remember and forget?  And of the man – how does his children resemble the aunts and uncles? So Amir al-Mu’mineen turned to Abu Muhammad al-Hasan and said: O Muhammad, answer him.

"...So he said: As for your question about where the soul of a man goes when he is asleep: his soul attaches to the wind, and the wind attached to the air, until the sleeper awakens. When Allah عز وجل permits, the soul returns to its owner. The soul is pulled out from the wind, and the wind is pulled out from the air, so the soul returns and remains in the body of its owner. If Allah عز وجل does not permit the soul to return to his owner, the air pulls the wind and the wind pulls the soul; and it will not return to its owner until he is resurrected..."

 الصدوق، عن أبيه، عن سعد بن عبد الله، عن أحمد وعبد الله ابني محمد بن عيسى، ومحمد بن الحسين، عن الحسن بن محبوب، عن محمد بن القاسم النوفلي قال قلت لأبي عبد الله الصادق (عليه السلام): المؤمن يرى الرؤيا فتكون كما رآها وربما رأى الرؤيا فلا تكون شيئا فقال: ان المؤمن إذا نام خرجت من روحه حركة ممدودة صاعدة إلى السماء فكلما رآه روح المؤمن في ملكوت السماء في موضع التقدير والتدبير فهو الحق وكلما رآه في الأرض فهو أضغاث أحلام فقلت له وتصعد روح المؤمن إلى السماء؟

قال: نعم قلت: حتى لا يبقى شيء في بدنه؟ فقال: لا لو خرجت كلها حتى لا يبقى منها شيء اذا لمات قلت فكيف تخرج؟ فقال: أما ترى الشمس في السماء في موضعها وضوؤها وشعاعها في الأرض فكذلك الروح أصلها في البدن وحركتها ممدودة 

Narrated from his father, from Saad bin Abdullah, from Ahmad and Abdullah ibne Mohammed bin Isa, And from Muhammad bin al-Hussein, from al-Hasan bin Mahbub, from Mohammad bin Qasim Nawfali who said: I said to Abu Abdullah al-Sadiq  (عليه السلام):

The believer sees the vision, then it [could be] as he saw, but perhaps he sees a vision, but it means nothing?” So he (عليه السلام) replied: “Verily if the believer rested, outstretched/elongated activity emerges from his soul to the Heaven. So whatever the believer’s soul sees in the Kingdom of Heaven about a matter of preordainment and planning then it is the truth. And whatever it sees regarding the earth then it is a confused dream.” – then the questioner said: “Does the believer’s soul ascend into the heaven[i.e. completely]?” So he (عليه السلام) replied: 

“No. If all of it emerged until nothing remains from it then he(the person) has died”. So he asked: “So how does it emerge?” So he (عليه السلام) said: “As for you seeing the sun in the sky with its location, its illumination, and its rays at the earth; then likewise the soul’s origin is in the body and its movement is outstretched/elongated”.

2. According to Sayyed al-Khoei, Mohammad bin Qasim Nawfali is "Majhool" and rest all are trustworthy.

جامع الأخبار: سأل أبو بصير أبا عبد الله عليه السلام: الرجل نائم هنا والمرأة النائمة يريان أنهما بمكة أو بمصر من الأمصار، أرواحهما خارج من أبدانهما؟ قال: لا يا أبا بصير، فإن الروح إذا فارقت البدن لم تعد إليه غير أنها بمنزلة عين الشمس هي مركبة  في السماء في كبدها وشعاعها في الدنيا.

In Jamia al-Akhbar: Abu Baseer asked Abu Abdullah (عليه السلام):

The sleeping man here, and the sleeping woman both see visions. Further, they are at Mecca and at Egypt of regions [respectively], [so are] their souls outside of their bodies?” He said: “No, O Abu Baseer, so indeed if the soul separated from the body then it will not return to it. Yet it is at a [similar] standing to the Sun’s eye which is centralised in the sky’s center, while its rays are in the world/dunya.” [i.e. the soul is centralised in the body and stretches outwards].

علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن ابن أبي عمير، عن عمرو بن أبي المقدام قال: سمعت أبا عبد الله (عليه السلام) يقول: "... قال أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام) لقنبر: يا قنبر أبشر..شيعتنا ينطقون بنور الله عز وجل ومن يخالفهم ينطقون بتفلت. والله ما من عبد من شيعتنا ينام إلا أصعد الله عز وجل روحه إلى السماء فيبارك عليها، فإن كان قد أتى عليها أجلها جعلها في كنوز رحمته وفي رياض جنته وفي ظل عرشه، وإن كان أجلها متأخرا بعث بها مع أمنته من الملائكة ليردوها إلى الجسد الذي خرجت منه لتسكن فيه.."

Ali Bin Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abu Umeyr, from Amro Bin Abu Al-Maqdaam who said: I heard Abu Abdullah (عليه السلام) saying:"...Amir-ul-Momineen (عليه السلام) has said to Qanbar: 

"O! Qanbar...Our Shites speak with the Light of Allah Mighty and Majestic, and the one who are opposed to them speak by instinct (biological needs). By Allah! There is none from our Shites who sleeps, except that Allah Makes his soul to ascend to the sky to be Blessed. So if its term (death) has come, He Makes it to be within the Treasures of His Mercy, and in the Gardens of Paradise, and in the Shade of His Throne. And if its term (death) has been delayed, He sends it back along with the trusted Angels to return it to the body from which it came out to dwell in it..."

Dreams

علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن ابن أبي عمير، عن هشام بن سالم، عن أبي عبد الله (عليه السلام) قال: سمعته يقول: رأى المؤمن ورؤياه في آخر الزمان على سبعين جزءا من أجزاء النبوة.

 Ali Bin Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abu Umeyr, from Hashaam Bin Saalim, who has narrated:

‘I heard Abu Abdullah (عليه السلام) saying: ‘The opinion and the dream of a ‘Momin’ (Believer),and what he sees in the later portion of the time is a seventieth part of the parts of the Prophet-hood’.

محمد بن يحيى، عن أحمد بن محمد، عن معمر بن خلاد، عن الرضا (عليه السلام) قال:إن رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) كان إذا أصبح قال: لأصحابه: هل من مبشرات. يعني به الرؤيا.

Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Muammar Bin Khallaad, who has narrated the following:

Al-Reza(عليه السلام) has said that the Rasool (صلى الله عليه وآله) of Allah used to say to his (صلى الله عليه وآله)companions in the morning: ‘Is there anything from the good news?’, meaning by it, the dreams’.

محمد بن يحيى، عن أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى، عن معمر بن خلاد قال: سمعت أبا الحسن (عليه السلام) يقول: ربما رأيت الرؤيا فأعبرها والرؤيا على ما تعبر 

Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad Bin Isa, from Muammar Bin Khallaad who said:

I heard Abu Al-Hassan(عليه السلام) saying: ‘Sometimes I see the dream, so I interpret it, and the dream is upon what you interpret’.

عدة من أصحابنا، عن سهل بن زياد، وعلي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، [جميعا]، عن ابن محبوب، عن عبد الله بن غالب، عن جابر بن يزيد، عن أبي جعفر (عليه السلام) أن رسول الله كان يقول: إن رؤيا المؤمن ترف بين السماء والأرض على رأس صاحبها حتى يعبرها لنفسه أو يعبرها له مثله فإذا عبرت لزمت الأرض فلا تقصوا رؤياكم إلا على من يعقل.

A number of our companions, from Sahl Bin Ziyad and Ali Bin Ibrahim, from his father together, from Ibn Mahboub, from Abdullah Bin Ghalib, from Jabir Bin Yazeed, who has narrated the following:

Abu Ja’far (عليه السلام) said that the Rasool Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله) had said: ‘The dream of the Believer floats in between the sky and the earth over the head of its dreamer until he interprets it for himself, or it is interpreted for him by someone like him. So when it gets interpreted, it comes to the ground. So do not narrate your dreams except to the one who understand’.

 علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن ابن أبي عمير، عن معاوية بن عمار، عن أبي عبد الله (عليه السلام) قال: إذا رأى الرجل ما يكره في منامه فليتحول عن شقه الذي كان عليه نائما وليقل: " إنما النجوى من الشيطان ليحزن الذين آمنوا وليس بضارهم شيئا (1) إلا بإذن الله " ثم ليقل: " عذت بما عاذت به ملائكة الله المقربون وأنبياؤه المرسلون وعباده الصالحون من شر ما رأيت ومن شر الشيطان الرجيم ".

Ali Bin Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abu Umeyr, from Muawiya bin Ammaar, who has said:

Abu Abdullah(عليه السلام) said: ‘If the man sees what he does not like in his dream, so he should change his sleeping position which he was in and should say, ‘The whispering is from the Satan to aggrieve those who Believe’, and nothing would harm him except by the Permission of Allah . Then he should say, ‘I seek Refuge with what the Angels of Proximity of Allah  and His  Prophets, and the righteous servants sought Refuge with, from the evil what I saw, and from the evil of the castaway Satan’.

Types of Dreams

علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن ابن أبي عمير، عن سعد بن أبي خلف، عن أبي عبد الله (عليه السلام) قال: الرؤيا على ثلاثة وجوه: بشارة من الله للمؤمن وتحذير من الشيطان وأضغاث أحلام.

Ali Bin Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abu Umeyr, from Sa’d Bin Abu Khalaf, who has narrated the following:

Abu Abdullah(عليه السلام) has said that the dreams are of three aspects - Good News from Allah  for the Believer, and a caution against the Satan, and confused dreams’.

 عدة من أصحابنا، عن أحمد بن محمد بن خالد، عن أبيه، عن النضر بن سويد، عن درست بن أبي منصور، عن أبي بصير قال: قلت: لأبي عبد الله (عليه السلام): جعلت فداك الرؤيا الصادقة والكاذبة مخرجهما من موضع واحد؟ قال: صدقت أما الكاذبة [ال‍] مختلفة فإن الرجل يراها في أول ليلة في سلطان المردة الفسقة وإنما هي شئ يخيل إلى الرجل وهي كاذبة مخالفة، لا خير فيها وأما الصادقة إذا رآها بعد الثلثين من الليل مع حلول الملائكة وذلك قبل السحر فهي صادقة، لا تخلف إن شاء الله إلا أن يكون جنبا أو ينام على غير طهور ولم يذكر الله عز وجل حقيقة ذكره فإنها تختلف وتبطئ على صاحبها.

A number of our companions, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad Bin Khalid, from his father, from Al-Nazar Bin Suweyd, from Dorost Bin Abu Mansour, from Abu Baseer who said:

‘I said to Abu Abdullah(عليه السلام), ‘May I be sacrificed for you(عليه السلام), the true and the false dreams both come from one place’ He(عليه السلام) said: ‘You have spoken the truth, but the false dreams are different for the man sees is in the first (part) of the night during the domination of the sinful rebels, and it is an imaginary thing to the man, and it is false and contradictory. There is nothing good in it. And as for the true (dream) it is if he saw it after the (passing) of the two thirds of the night with the advent of the Angels, and that is before the dawn. So this is the true (dream), it will not be contradicted, Allah  Willing, except if he was in a state of being in requirement of Major ablution (Junuub), or he has slept without being clean, and he did not Mention Allah  Mighty and Majestic with true Remembrance, for then it would vary and be delayed to its dreamer’.

Some Dream Interpretation by Aimmah(عليه السلام)

عنه، عن أحمد بن محمد، عن ابن فضال، عن الحسن بن جهم قال: سمعت أبا الحسن (عليه السلام) يقول: الرؤيا على ما تعبر، فقلت له: إن بعض أصحابنا روى أن رؤيا الملك كانت أضغاث أحلام، فقال أبو الحسن (عليه السلام): إن امرأة رأت على عهد الرسول (صلى الله عليه وآله) أن جذع بيتها قد انكسر فأتت رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) فقصت عليه الرؤيا فقال لها النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله):يقدم زوجك ويأتي وهو صالح، وقد كان زوجها غائبا فقدم كما قال النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله) ثم غاب عنها زوجها غيبة أخرى فرأت في المنام كان جذع بيتها قد انكسر فأتت النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله) فقصت عليه الرؤيا فقال لها: يقدم زوجك ويأتي صالحا فقدم على ما قال، ثم غاب زوجها ثالثة فرأت في منامها أن جذع بيتها قد انكسر فلقيت رجلا أعسر فقصت عليه الرؤيا فقال لها الرجل السوء: يموت زوجك، قال فبلغ [ذلك] النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله) فقال: ألا كان عبر لها خيرا.

From him, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Ibn Fazzaal, from AL-Hassan bin Jahm who said:

"I heard Abu Al-Hassan(عليه السلام) saying: ‘The dream is upon what interpretation you give it’. So I said to him(عليه السلام) that, ‘Some of our companions are reporting that the dream of the king was a confused dream’. So Abu Al-Hassan(عليه السلام) said: ‘A woman saw a dream during the era of the Rasool Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله) that a pillar of her house had broken. So she came to the Rasool Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله) and related the dream to him (صلى الله عليه وآله). The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله) said to her: ‘Your husband will come to you safely’; and her husband had gone away (in a caravan). So he came just as the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله) said that he would. Then he went away from her for another time. She saw in the dream as if a pillar of her house had broken. So she came to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله) and related the dream to him (صلى الله عليه وآله). So he (صلى الله عليه وآله) said to her: ‘Your husband will come to you safely’. So he came as he (صلى الله عليه وآله) had said he would. Then her husband went away for a third time. She saw in her dream that a pillar of her house had broken. She met a left-handed man (a fortune teller), so she related her dream to him. The man said to her, ‘The evil. Your husband is dead’. (As the news of her dead husband) reached the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله), so he (صلى الله عليه وآله) said: ‘If only he had interpreted it for her in a good way’.

 عدة من أصحابنا، عن أحمد بن محمد بن خالد، عن أبيه، عن النضر بن سويد، عن الحلبي، عن ابن مسكان، عن زرارة، عن أبي جعفر (عليه السلام) قال: رأيت كأني على رأس جبل والناس يصعدون إليه من كل جانب حتى إذا كثروا عليه تطاول بهم في السماء وجعل الناس يتساقطون عنه من كل جانب حتى لم يبق منهم أحد إلا عصابة يسيرة ففعل ذلك خمس مرات في كل ذلك يتساقط عنه الناس ويبقي تلك العصابة أما إن قيس بن عبد الله بن عجلان في تلك العصابة، قال: فما مكث بعد ذلك إلا نحوا من خمس حتى هلك.

A number of our companions, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad Bin Khalid, from his father, from Al-Nazar Bin Suweyd, from Al-Halby, from Ibn Muskaan, from Zurara, who has narrated the following:

Abu Ja’far(عليه السلام) having said: ‘I(عليه السلام) saw (in a dream) as if I(عليه السلام) am on top of a mountain, and the people are climbing up from all sides, to the extent that they were many of them, and it prolonged by them in the sky, and the people started falling off from it from all sides until there did not remain among them any one except for a small group. So they made an attempt five times, and during each of that the people fell off from it and there did not remain except for a (small) group. As for Qays Bin Abdullah Bin Ajlaan, he was in that group’. He (the narrator) said: ‘He(عليه السلام) did not remain after that except for about five (days) until he(عليه السلام) passed away’.

 عنه ، عن أحمد بن محمد بن أبي نصر، عن حماد بن عثمان قال: حدثني أبو بصير قال: سمعت أبا عبد الله (عليه السلام) يقول: إن رجلا كان على أميال من المدينة فرأى في منامه فقيل له: انطلق فصل على أبي جعفر (عليه السلام) فإن الملائكة تغسله في البقيع فجاء الرجل فوجد أبا جعفر (عليه السلام) قد توفي.

From him, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad Bin Abu Nasr, from Hammaad Bin Usman who said:

‘Abu Baseer narrated to me by saying, ‘I heard Abu Abdullah(عليه السلام) saying that: ‘A man who was miles away from Al-Medina, saw in his dream in which it was said to him, ‘Go and Pray over Abu Ja’far(عليه السلام), for the Angels have performed his(عليه السلام) washing in Al-Baqi’e’. So the man went, and found Abu Ja’far(عليه السلام) to have passed away’.

علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه عن ابن أبي عمير، عن ابن أذينة أن رجلا دخل على أبي عبد الله (عليه السلام) فقال: رأيت كأن الشمس طالعة على رأسي دون جسدي فقال: تنال أمرا جسيما ونورا ساطعا ودينا شاملا فلو غطتك لانغمست فيه ولكنها غطت رأسك أما قرأت " فلما رأى الشمس بازغة قال هذا ربي... فلما أفلت تبرأ منها إبراهيم (عليه السلام)، قال: قلت: جعلت فداك إنهم يقولون: إن الشمس خليفة أو ملك؟ فقال: ما أراك تنال الخلافة ولم يكن في آبائك وأجدادك ملك وأي خلافة وملوكية أكبر من الدين والنور ترجو به دخول الجنة، إنهم يغلطون، قلت:صدقت جعلت فداك.

Ali Bin Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abu Umeyr, from Ibn Azina that: 

A man came up to Abu Abdullah(عليه السلام) and said, ‘I saw (a dream) as if the sun emerging upon my head apart from my body’. So he(عليه السلام) said: ‘You will achieve a huge matter, and ‘ وَ نُوراً سَاطِعا ’ aً brilliant light, and a comprehensive Religion. Had it covered you, you would have been submerged in it, but it only covered your head. But, have you not read: “[6:78] Then when he saw the sun rising, he said: Is this my Lord? Is this the greatest? So when it set”, Ibrahim distanced himself from it’. I said, ‘May I be sacrificed for you(عليه السلام), they are saying that the sun is a Caliph or a king’. So he(عليه السلام) said: ‘I(عليه السلام) do not see how you can achieve the Caliphate and there was never a king in your forefathers and your ancestors. And which Caliphate and kingdom is greater than the Religion, and ‘ النُّورِ ’ the Light which you hope would make you to enter into the Paradise? They are mistaken’. I said, ‘May I be sacrificed for you(عليه السلام), you(عليه السلام) have spoken the truth’.

1. Allamah Majlisi:"Hasan" (Mirat ul Uqool 26/318)

عنه، عن رجل رأى كأن الشمس طالعة على قدميه دون جسده، قال: ما يناله نبات من الأرض من بر أو تمر يطأه بقدميه ويتسع فيه وهو حلال إلا أنه يكد فيه كما كد آدم (عليه السلام).

From him, from a man who saw (in a dream) as if the sun emerging upon his feet apart from his body, who has narrated the following:

Imam(عليه السلام) said regarding a man who saw (in a dream) that sun shine on his feet and not on his body, ‘he will acquire plenty of wealth from the plantations of the earth, from wheat and dates which he will tread by his feet and hold on to it, and it is Permissible, except that he will have to toil for it as Adam toiled’.

Note: The reason I believe that Allamah Majlisi has said this Hadeeth as "Hasan" regardless of unknown narrator name, because Imam has praised this man in above hadeeth.
